Few jockeys have won the Kentucky Derby as many times as John Velazquez. And none have competed in the Run for the Roses as frequently as Mike Smith. They'll both be among the 20-strong field looking to race to victory during the 2022 Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Velazquez is one of only 11 jockeys to have three or more Derby victories. He won in 2011 (Animal Kingdom), 2017 (Always Dreaming) and 2020 (Authentic). And he briefly won the 2021 Kentucky Derby before Medina Spirit was disqualified for a failed drug test. This year, Velazquez will be aboard Messier in the hunt for his fourth.

Smith will be competing in the Derby for the 28th time when he rides Taiba on Saturday. The 56-year-old has two previous wins in the Run for the Roses—in 2005 (Giacomo) and in 2018 (Justify, who won the Triple Crown).

If either Velazquez or Smith is going to notch another Derby victory, Messier or Taiba will have to beat the betting favorites, Zandon (3-1) and Epicenter (7-2).

Here's a look at the full 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup, along with the trainers and jockeys for each horse.

Secret Oath leads trainer D. Wayne Lukas to fifth Kentucky Oaks win. A run through the field: Odds and info on every 2022 Kentucky Derby contender. Unique Derby horses include Japanese champ, world traveler and a gray that’s a favorite

Every year the Kentucky Derby is filled with rags-to-riches stories of success, first-time participants, longtime Derby regulars and everything in between.

The 2022 Kentucky Derby field is no different, and features a plethora of fascinating horses and storylines to follow in the days and hours leading up to the Run for the Roses.

Here are three of the most unique horses — and their backstories — set to take part in this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Crown Pride is in the Kentucky Derby field thanks to a win by nearly 3 lengths in the UAE Derby in March. He is only the second Japanese-trained horse, and the first Japanese-bred, to win that event. Now, Crown Pride becomes the latest horse with ties to Japan to test itself in the Run for the Roses. The first time a Japanese horse shipped to Louisville to run the Kentucky Derby was in 1995, when Ski Captain finished 14th. Another Japanese horse shipped to Churchill Downs in 2016, when Lani finished ninth.

If there is rain at the Kentucky Derby, this 30-1 long shot could win it all

The Kentucky Derby has been run over a sloppy, wet or muddy track four times since it adopted its qualification point system in 2012. That could be the case again Saturday, with rain expected to blanket the Louisville area for much of the week until post time. The Accuweater forecast gives an 80 percent chance of rain on Saturday, with a 16 percent chance of thunderstorms — following a rainy day on Friday — necessitating an alternative handicapping scheme if a muddy or sloppy track indeed develops.

No. 6 Messier, my pick to win, is a solid choice rain or shine, but poor track conditions should improve the chances of No. 11 Pioneer of Medina, an enticing thought with his odds at 30-1 on the morning line. Both horses will feature in my trifecta and superfecta approach in wet or sloppy conditions.

Churchill Downs CEO on what to expect for Kentucky Derby 2022 and beyond

Bill Carstanjen talks this year's betting and plans for the future

The fanfare surrounding the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Racetrack is legendary, and the company that owns the iconic horse racing complex is betting big on keeping it that way.

While gearing up for this year's "greatest two minutes in sports," Churchill Downs, Inc., CEO William Carstanjen gave FOX Business insight into what he anticipates surrounding this year's run for the roses — and beyond.

"It is really great to see the Kentucky Derby festivities return to the traditional energy and excitement as we prepare to open our gates at Churchill Downs Racetrack to a full capacity crowd for the first time in 2 years," Carstanjen wrote in an email. "Based on advanced reserved ticket sales, we expect to deliver record Derby Week results."

The CEO noted that many general admission guests wait until the day of the event to buy tickets, and often weather plays a factor in that volume with a slight impact on attendance.
