Arts Education Partnerships

The mission of the Indianapolis Museum of Art-Columbus Gallery's education committee is to provide visual enrichment programs and to foster aesthetic appreciation in children and adults through tours, workshops and community outreach programs that complement and enhance the Gallery's exhibitions.

The IMA-CG offers many resources to area schools and groups interested in education.

Teaching Resource Kits
Three resource kits have been researched and assembled to coordinate with the BCSC social studies curriculum. They include visual aids, slides, artifacts, and "hands-on" materials as well as books and maps to enrich classroom instruction. The trunk topics are Egyptian, Native American, and Early Indiana. Available at no charge for two week loan periods.

Group Tours
The IMA-Columbus Gallery offers world-class exhibitions for the Columbus community. An effort is made to choose shows with a broad ethnic background covering a variety of media. Teachers are encouraged to schedule class tours of the exhibitions. Trained volunteers or staff are available for informational tours and activities.

Art Smart Indiana
The IMA-Columbus Gallery has presented this program for 15 years. It was designed to complement the fourth grade Indiana history unit by reinforcing historical material while introducing material about Indiana culture and general art concepts. Trained docents make in-class presentations to all fourth grade classrooms in Bartholomew County.

Videos and Slides

  • Impressionism, from the National Gallery of Art, is a slide presentation suitable for grades 5-12.
  • Adventures in Art, from the National Gallery of Art, explains how art is a reflection of history and shows the evolution of paintings from the middle ages to the 20th century,
  • Eye of the Beholder, is a six-minute introduction to visiting the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Slides and Videos are available at no charge for two-week loan periods.
