The mission of the
Columbus Area Arts Council is to provide visionary leadership
in the arts. The Arts Council fosters, supports and
promotes growth in arts that educate and enrich the cultural
environment of
Bartholomew
County and Region Nine.
The Columbus Area Arts Council and
its member agencies provide a variety of quality arts and
entertainment events, exhibits and programs in the Columbus
area. Many of these programs, such as First Fridays for Families
and JCBNeighborFEST! are free to the general public.
In
association with the Columbus
Parks and Recreation Department, the Arts Council serves
as programmer and manager of the Custer-Nugent Amphitheater
in Mill Race Park. A popular feature of the partnership is
an annual two-day outdoor art festival where patrons can enjoy
fine arts and fine crafts, live musical entertainment and
good food.
The Arts Council serves more than
25 General and Affiliate members
and other community, governmental and civic organizations.
Guidance is given on various issues including publicity,
marketing, administrative support and arts advocacy.
Two conference rooms are available for booking. In cooperation
with the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, the Arts
Council also provides scheduling, management and programming
of The Commons, a city-owned facility, and programming and
technical support at the Custer-Nugent Amphitheater in Mill
Race Park.
The Arts Council distributes a monthly
electronic newsletter, provides press release service, and
secures free and reduced advertising for the arts in Columbus.
The Arts Council's Ticket
Center provides area residents with one central location
to purchase tickets for arts and cultural activities.
The Arts Council remains at the forefront
of issues affecting the arts by active involvement in local,
state and national service organizations. Arts Council memberships
include the Columbus
Area Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Presenters Network,
the Indiana Advocates
for the Arts, Americans
for the Arts, Association
of Performing Arts Presenters, and VSA
arts of Indiana.
The Arts Council maintains a three-year
community calendar listing arts-related events scheduled in
the Columbus community. Each January, representatives of arts
organizations, Parks and Recreation, and area schools convene
to develop a schedule for events at mutually agreed dates,
times, and locations. This calendar is continually updated
and is provided to the Columbus
Area Visitors Center for inclusion on their web site.
